ABOUT LIANGHONG FENG
Lianghong Feng has been painting in the Abstract Expressionist style for over two decades, and he has now become one of the most influential contemporary painters in this genre in China. His lush surfaces speak of the dialog between the artist and canvas, a call, and response between mark and brushstroke, of the application of color and the scribing back into the paint surface.
Feng lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for a time and he describes his first trip to the US as pivotal in his artistic development. While he was nurturing his understanding of Western Art, he was simultaneously re-establishing his appreciation for traditional Chinese culture. In his most recent work, Chinese culture is not overtly evident. In describing the work, he says, “It contains the meaning of ancient Chinese philosophy. If there were any Chinese characteristics, I would say I am inspired by this concept.”
Feng calls upon his dual influences of East and West in explaining his use of paint “daubing” and “splashing”. He is drawn to these techniques for their formal qualities and for their conceptual meaning. In the East, paint daubing is used to create grass portions in traditional Chinese landscape painting. In the West, Feng associates splashing with the prevalent graffiti he saw in New York City, a non-cultural and “irrational” form of painting he sees in complete contrast to the Chinese mindset. He combines both techniques in his work, seamlessly synthesizing influences traditionally in opposition with one another.
The recent retrospective of his work at the prestigious new Inside-Out Museum featured dozens of Feng’s impressively scaled canvases installed in all three full floors of the museum. Currently, his work is included in two national exhibitions on abstract painting, one of which is slated to tour from Beijing to Shanghai, Tokyo, and then on to Europe. The gallery is pleased to be featuring one of five of his newest works, completed during a residency at the Peace Hotel in Shanghai last year.
