ARTIST OF THE DAY: JANE CAMPION

ARTIST OF THE DAY: JANE CAMPION

Recently, I have partnered with a pianist (Racqui Borromeo) to create the music for the videos/vignettes that I’ll be sharing as part of THE DOT PROJECT (Coronavirus Project #2). Because of our collaborative reunion, I have been listening to a range of music from the 30’s and 40’s. But in my search for music styles, I recently found the soundtrack from the film THE PIANO by Jane Campion and…

ARTIST OF THE DAY: SALLY HAWKINS

ARTIST OF THE DAY: SALLY HAWKINS

ON A PERSONAL NOTE: I travelled from New York City to pick up a dear friend in New Britain, CT so that we could drive to Litchfield County on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to see MAUDIE with Sally Hawkins at the historic BANTAM MOVIE THEATER, a single screen movie theatre in a quaint little barn. MAUDIE was THIS important for me to share with THIS particular friend. A beautiful movie outing that was intended to bridge a complicated relationship…

ARTIST OF THE DAY: SALLY MANN

ON A PERSONAL NOTE: The honesty of Mann’s work has always riveted me. In these times of raw, bare, “skin off the bones” terror in our world; in our nation, I can’t think of another photographer that I would love to capture this moment in time.

“Few photographers of any time or place have matched Sally Mann’s steadiness of simple eyesight, her serene technical brilliance, and the clearly communicated eloquence she derives from her subjects, human and otherwise – subjects observed with an ardor that is all but indistinguishable from love.”

SALLY MANN QUOTE

“There is a great quote from a female writer. She said, ‘If you don’t break out in a sweat of fear when you write, you are not writing well enough.” I tend to agree. I think my best pictures come when I push myself.” – Sally Mann

HOPE’S WISH FOR YOU

I wish you great epiphanies in times of great struggle. We must push ourselves to be better.

ARTIST OF THE DAY: GRACE KELLY

PERSONAL NOTE ABOUT GRACE: Grace is defined as having simple elegance or refinement of movement; exhibiting courteous goodwill. I think of my mother, who grilled GRACE into my head by reminding me that all that is needed to possess Grace & Dignity is a bar or soap and good manners. She was right. It takes so little to show up for people, to be kind, to lend a helping hand, to make that phone call you’ve been meaning to make, to sacrifice a few bucks or a little bit of time, to listen, to say you care, to be present in the moment.

DOT with FLYING FLOWERS.jpg

Smashworks Dance presents a work-in-progress excerpt from FEMPIRE — a utopian world run by unharnessed and uninhibited women. An evening length performance of episodic dances, FEMPIRE introduces various women characters of strength and uncensored expressions of truth, playfully pushing against gender normative stereotypes through feminist camp. Featuring choreography by Ashley McQueen in collaboration with Smashworks Dance, and introducing newest performer Hope Salas in collaboration with Justin Cimino, FEMPIRE fuses dance performance with prop-driven physical theatre to present a culmination of our current feminist fight — loud, uncensored, and unafraid.

In collaboration with Justin Cimino (Director, Founder & Artistic Director of Pigeonholed Theater) HOPE SALAS & SMASHWORKS DANCE CO will be devising work that will highlight the contributions of the female clowns/performers of the Silent Film Era.

Inspired by James Thiérrée, Pina Bausch & Bill Irwin, Smashworks Dance Co. & Hope Salas Productions intend to intersect the control and form of the dancer; the curiosity, joy, and discovery of the clown; and the inspiration of the truth seeking storyteller.  We convey poignant theatrical, transportative moments, aligned to our mission of capitalizing on the “voices” of women in the arts and their power to create change.

Featuring performances by:
Hope Salas
Ashley McQueen
Justin Cimino

Manon Hallay
